2022 was a great year for horror movies. Horror movies are some of the most exciting releases each year. We all know what we're going to get from a Marvel movie, or an Oscar-bait drama like, say, Spencer (although it deserves the praise). But horror is a genre where some truly weird stuff can happen. Who doesn't want to see, say, Sebastian Stan play a charming cannibal, or the meta-filled murder spree in the fifth Scream film?
2022 has provided some strong additions to the growing catalogue of modern horror, plus a few misses (ahem, Morbius for one). Jordan Peele's Nope is without a doubt an Oscar contender (and lead actress Keke Palmer deserves heaps of praise). The South by Southwest darling Bodies Bodies Bodies brought a little humor and lot of scares from upcoming stars (such as Rachel Sennott and Chase Sui Wonders) and established names (Lee Pace, Amandla Stenberg, and Pete Davidson).Smile was an unexpected hit at the box office. Plus, Jamie Lee Curtis reprised her iconic role as Laurie Strode one last time in the final installment of the newest Halloween trilogy. Of course, not every film we expected this year came to pass; we're still waiting on Evil Dead Rise, which has now been moved to 2023. So if you're ready to catch up on this year's best releases, grab your popcorn and your nightlight—it's about to get spooky.
Here are the best horror films of the year and where you can stream them all right now.

Scream
With Scream's January 2022 release, it's clear nostalgia will get people into theaters. The newest installment of the horror-movie-that-spoofs-other-horror-movies franchise did surprisingly well at the box office, and has already spawned another sequel. Fans of the franchise won't be disappointed.

5
Morbius
Jared Leto stars in the Sony-produced adaptation of the Marvel anti-hero Morbius. Suffering from a lifelong blood disease, a doctor goes on a harrowing journey to find a cure and suddenly finds himself transformed into a powerful vampire. For better or worse, Morbius is one of the most talked about movies of the year. It's, uh, not great but if you want to see what all the fuss is about, here's where you can stream it now.
6
Jessie Buckley stars in this upcoming horror movie directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation). We don't want to spoil too much about the film, but it's about grief, and well...a lot of creepy men.

Jordan Peele is back with another horror movie that's sure to be the talk of the year. Nope stars Steven Yeun, Keke Palmer, Daniel Kaluuya, and Euphoria's Barbie Ferriera. There's not much information about the movie yet, but from the cryptic trailer, we can make a decent guess it's alien-related.

We're All Going to the World's Fair
Technically this entry was shown at Sundance in 2021, but it didn't get its U.S. theater release until 2022; it made its way to HBO Max in September. If you want to watch a creepy horror flick that rides the line between mystery, terror, and realism, look no further than the critical indie hit We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, which tells the story of a young girl who gets into a weird online challenge that causes her own mental state to quickly devolve. Think of this as a companion piece to Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade—and one that comes with quite a few deeply unsettling moments.

Barbarian
Justin Long's new movie is one of those films you want every horror fan to see, but you don't want to tell them too much about it so they don't get spoiled. But to give a simple explanation: a young woman discovers the house she's renting is occupied by someone already. Against her best judgement, she decides to stay the night. If you want to know more, it's best to just watch the movie.

Smile

Writer/director Parker Finn establishes himself as yet another exciting talent in the horror space with Smile, a movie that feels kind of like a spiritual successor to The Ring, but includes a lot of things that great horror movies really need: exciting, almost Raimi-esque camerawork, a cast game for a movie that inevitably goes bonkers led by Sosie Bacon and Kyle Gallner, and some genuinely inventive and exciting scares and violent moments. Smile is a movie that will be watched by horror fans very late at night for years and years to come.

Halloween Ends
Jamie Lee Curtis is set to reprise her role in the third and final installment of the newest Halloween trilogy, where she'll (hopefully) kill Michael Myers once and for all. According to People, filming has already wrapped, and Curtis has said goodbye to final girl Laurie Strode for good.
